At nLighten, sustainability doesn’t stop at power and cooling.
It’s about how we build, how we operate, and how we give back — locally and practically. Our recent Bristol data center project is a good example of what we mean by sustainability in action: combining complex infrastructure delivery with responsible material handling and meaningful community support.
Responsible Removal and Material Recovery
As part of our Bristol deployment, we worked closely with environmental services partner Malary to remove redundant infrastructure and ensure materials were processed through appropriate recycling and recovery channels wherever possible.
Working with Malary, all equipment and materials removed from the Bristol project were diverted from landfill through recycling or recovery processes managed through their specialist facilities.
Alongside the infrastructure works, the project also supported a community initiative. nLighten made a charitable contribution to Caring in Bristol, which Malary chose to match as part of the collaboration.
The result was a project that combined operational delivery with a positive local outcome.
This is the kind of sustainability we believe in: practical, local and tangible.
Delivering a Complex Bristol Deployment
Malary played a critical role in enabling the next phase of our Bristol data center development, supporting the safe removal and replacement of large-scale generator infrastructure.
Their work included:
• Surveying three redundant generators, each weighing over 20 tonnes
• Designing an innovative solution that required partial building disassembly
• Carrying out specialised ground borehole testing to confirm crane load specifications
• Installing structural scaffolding capable of supporting more than 20 tonnes
• Carefully manoeuvring and removing generators using Malary low-loader HGVs
• Craning in new generators to allow nLighten to progress with Stage 2 of the site
• Clearing the site and fully reassembling the building exterior
The result was a carefully coordinated, safety-first operation that allowed our project to move forward efficiently.
As Malary shared:
“There was a great collaborative approach between our companies to achieve a very complex task. Recycling, recovery and industrial services sit at the heart of what we do, guided by our values: Safety First, Take Ownership, Working Together and Delivering Excellence.”
Supporting the Local Community
Beyond infrastructure, the project also created an opportunity to support the local community.
nLighten made a donation to Caring in Bristol, a charity supporting people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity across the city. Malary matched this contribution as part of the partnership.
A spokesperson from Caring in Bristol said:
“Support like this helps us continue providing practical services for people experiencing homelessness in Bristol — from day-to-day essentials through to longer-term support that helps people move towards more stable housing.”
Malary added:
“Being part of supporting Caring in Bristol really resonates with us. We’re proud to know our donation will make a real difference. People matter. People are important.”
What’s Next
Projects like this demonstrate how infrastructure delivery can also create wider value when organisations work together.
As Sam Hill, Senior Project Manager at nLighten, noted:
“Working closely with Malary, we safely removed redundant generators and roof-mounted equipment using fully compliant RAMS and CDM processes, ensuring everything was delivered to the highest safety standards. It’s a great example of how infrastructure projects can create wider value while supporting our growth plans.”
nLighten will continue looking for opportunities to combine responsible operational practices with initiatives that support the communities around our sites.
